Wild tea grown in fertile soil
In the sacred Adam's Peak Wilderness Forest in Sabaragamuwa Province, Sri Lanka, a tea plantation was established by a Scottish tea planter during the British colonial period and then abandoned for 130 years. Located at an altitude of 2,900 feet (approximately 830 meters), the tea plantation spans over 100 acres (approximately 45 hectares). This once-abandoned tea estate has now been transformed into a lush forest of diverse flora, with tea plants still growing tall and intermingling with other plants. Artisans climb the tea plants, which reach heights of 30-40 feet (approximately 30-45 meters), to hand-pick the tea leaves. The tea's distinctive earthy flavor comes from nutrients absorbed by taproots deeply rooted in the rich soil of this pristine environment.
Harvesting 4 kg of fresh tea leaves per day only yields 1 kg of tea leaves. This rare wild tea is highly sought after around the world.
